“An 88-year-old resident of the capital received an unknown phone call and was informed that her daughter allegedly had an accident and urgently needed expensive medical care.
The frightened woman gave her address, and soon an “assistant” came to her house and promised to transfer the money to the hospital. – the message says.
According to law enforcement officers, the woman from Kyiv handed over all her savings to a stranger – about 187,000 hryvnias. When the pensioner called her daughter in the morning, she realized that she had become a victim of scammers and turned to the police for help.
The perpetrator turned out to be a 28-year-old resident of Odesa, who had already served a sentence for property crimes in the past.
Operatives from the capital detained the man at his place of residence in Odesa. He was declared a suspect under Part 3 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (fraud committed during a state of war or state of emergency, which caused significant damage to the victim). The sanction of the article provides for a fine from 68 to 136 thousand hryvnias or deprivation of liberty for a period of three to five years.
According to the court verdict, the perpetrator will spend 4 years behind bars.
