In 2023, the product was discontinued worldwide, informs Sky News.
The plaintiffs allege that they or their family members developed ovarian cancer or mesothelioma (a malignant tumor of the tissue that lines the serous membranes of body cavities and covers internal organs) as a result of using Johnson&Johnson baby powder between 1965 and 2023.
The lawsuit alleges that the product was contaminated with carcinogens, including asbestos. And the company hid this risk from people for decades.
Talc is a natural mineral. However, plaintiffs’ attorney Michael Rollinson said in court documents that there are very few, if any, commercially exploited talc deposits in the world that do not contain asbestos.
He also alleges that the company withheld information that could indicate contamination of the baby powder and influenced regulators to ensure sales were possible. In addition, Rollinson claims that J&J sponsored research that “downplayed the risks” to health.
One of the plaintiffs is 75-year-old Janet Fuscillo, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 7 years ago. She says she has been using the powder since the 1960s, and has also applied it to the skin of her four children.

The husband of another applicant, Patricia Angell, died in 2006 at the age of 64. A few weeks earlier, he had been diagnosed with mesothelioma. The woman said he showered every day after work and used J&J powder. According to her, the autopsy report contained data on talc and asbestos.
By data According to the National Health Service of Great Britain, this carcinogen is usually the cause of mesothelioma. Often, a tumor is formed in the lungs after inhalation of microscopic fibers.
The plaintiffs are seeking damages from J&J and Kenvue UK, which split from the former in 2023.
At the same time, a representative of Kenvue denied that the powder causes cancer.
“The safety of Johnson’s baby powder has been confirmed by years of independent testing by leading laboratories, universities and health authorities in the UK and around the world.
High-quality cosmetic talc […] met all necessary regulatory standards, did not contain asbestos and did not cause cancer.” – he assured.
J&J will stop selling talc-based baby powder in the US in 2020, and globally in 2023. Now the company produces a product based on corn starch.
J&J also faces lawsuits in the US over exposure to the powder. So, last week the company was ordered to pay $966 million to the family of a woman who died of mesothelioma.
We will remind, in 2018, in the USA, Johnson & Johnson submitted over 6,000 people to court over talc-based baby powder.
And in 2017, a court in California obliged company to pay $417 million to a woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using feminine hygiene products containing talc.
