Nobel Prize in Physics in 2025 got John Clark, Richard Devore and John Martinis – for experimental observation of quantum tunneling of a macroscopic object, namely superconducting condensate.

As the Academician of Ukraine Alexander Kordyuk, the Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, explains in a comment for “Life”, this discovery showed that quantum effects can be manifested not only at the level of individual particles, but also in whole macro objects.

The award was given for experimental observation of quantum tunneling of a macroscopic object – superconducting condensation. Clark and Martinez are good experimenters, Devore – theorist“, – Kordyuk notes.

Scientists already knew about their experiments about the tuning of individual electrons – for this in 1973, Nobelivka was received by Josefson, Esaki and Jayver.

And Clark, Devore and Martinis watched the tunneling of the entire condensate. The pairs of electrons in the superconductor behave as one quantum object, are in one condition and are indistinguishable. Therefore, quantum effects can be observed: tunneling, quantization of energy – on a macroscopic scale“, – says Kordyuk.

And this, adding the scientist, has opened the opportunity to create devices where quantum behavior is manifested in real electrical circuits, not just in microscopic atomic systems.

According to Kordyuk, the theoretical basis of this idea was laid by the British physicist Anthony Leett, and Clark, Devore and Martinis in 1985 were able to experimentally show quantum tunnery in Josephson’s contact.

They realized the idea of a leg, not even on a ring with Josephson contact, but on the contact itself. And it formed the basis of modern superconducting cubes“, – Kordyuk notes.

It was these cubes that later used the John Martinis team when he managed the development of a superconducting quantum computer of Google.

Kordyuk also emphasizes that Ukrainian physicists were standing with these discoveries.

Interestingly, Vladimir Shnirkov, now KAU employee, conducted such experiments in 1985 in Kharkiv, in FTINT. He watched quantization on the loop, as he suggested“, – says Kordyuk.
