Yes, in response to the question of how NATO countries can collectively contribute to Ukraine’s victory now, the former Pentagon head said: “I think we need to do more of what we do.”
He recalled the results of the NATO summit in the Hague, when the vast majority of the Alliance member countries expressed “quite obvious” support of Ukraine and agreed to increase contributions to collective defense to 5% of GDP.
“So 3.5% of this promise will go to basic defense issues, and another 1.5% – for infrastructure, this is a huge obligation. And this, in my opinion, means a lot of resources to provide additional support not only to Ukraine but also, most importantly, to all NATO countries,” Austin said.
In addition, he emphasized the need to use these resources in the best way, with a thoughtful purchase of the necessary weapons and ammunition systems, mobilization of the industrial base and coordination of joint efforts in this area. According to the former US Defense Minister, if done correctly, Europe will become stronger.
Austin also described the position in which Ukraine is now. He stressed:
“When we look at the situation now, after more than three years, Ukraine remains a sovereign country – it makes its own decisions, it knows, it remains a very democratic country. And we want to see it in the future to be democracy and have a means of self -defense.”
