The invasion of Russian fighters into Estonia: NATO promised a decisive reaction

The North Atlantic Council on Tuesday, September 23, gathered at the request of Estonia in accordance with Article 4 of the Washington Treaty to discuss and decisively condemn the dangerous violation of Russia by the country on September 19. NATO promised that the Alliance’s reaction “to the reckless actions of Russia will still be decisive.”

“This invasion is part of the wider trend of more irresponsible behavior of Russia. It is for the second time in two weeks, when the North Atlantic Council holds a meeting in accordance with Article 4. It also emphasized that a number of NATO countries, including Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Romania, have also recently faced violations of their airspace by Russia.

“Russia is fully responsible for these actions, which lead to escalation of the conflict, risk leading to a wrong assessment of the situation and jeopardize people’s lives. They must stop,” the statement emphasized.

NATO promised that the Alliance’s reaction “to the reckless actions of Russia will still be decisive.”

“Russia should not have any doubt: NATO and Alliance Member States will use, under international law, all the necessary military and non-military means to protect themselves and containing all the threats on all sides,” the statement said.

NATO also assured that no actions of Russia would distract allies from their constant commitment to Ukraine’s support.

What was before:

• Russian fighters violated the air space of Estonia over the Finnish bay and remained there for 12 minutes. NATO reported that they had intercepted aircraft.
• During the meeting of the UN Security Council, convened through an incident in Estonia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom Yvetan Cooper stated that NATO was ready to respond to violations of its airspace by Russian military aircraft.
• And the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga called on NATO for more decisive action in response to the violation of his airspace of Russia, up to the “neutralization” of hostile goals.
• Before that, Czech President Petr Pavel expressed his conviction that NATO should respond to a military manner to Russian violation.
