Burkina-Faso leaders, Mali and Niger said “the ISS was unable to consider and persecute proven war crimes, humanity crimes, genocide crimes and aggression crimes.”

The ISS has not yet responded to the decisions of three countries that have close ties with Russia. Russian ruler Vladimir Putin is under the arrest of the ISS.

African leaders said they want to create “their own mechanisms for strengthening peace and justice.” Military junta control Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger after the coups from 2020 to 2023.

Their armies faced charges of crimes against civilians.

In recent years, Russia has strengthened its ties with three countries.

Recall:

  • The ISS was established in 2002 to prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression. Of the 33 cases that have been violated from the moment of its creation, all but one concerned African countries.
  • The country’s exit from the ISS officially enters into force a year after the UN report.
  • In 2023, the ISS issued a warrant for the arrest of Vladimir Putin on suspicion of war crimes in Ukraine.
  • As part of another coordinated action, all three countries left the economic community of Western African states (Ekocoas) at the beginning of this year. They rejected the requirements of the Ekovas for the restoration of democratic rule.
