“Belgium today sends a strong political and diplomatic signal to the world, joining a group of countries that announce the recognition of Palestine’s state,” said Belgium Prime Minister Bart de Val.
“I am also aware that the recognition of the Palestinian state is somehow equivalent to Hamas’s victory. However, a two-state solution is the worst possible result for Hamas. It is not what they want. They want Israel to disappear from the world map,” said Prime Minister Malta Robert Abela.
“Belgium will proceed to the legal recognition of the Palestinian state, when all hostages will be released and all terrorist organizations such as Hamas will be removed from Palestine’s management,” de Vever emphasized.
Luxembourg Prime Minister Luke Frieden emphasized the need to act despite the difficult situation.
“Rarely, when the prospect of a two -state solution seemed as distant as it is today. Still, the international will to achieve it was as one. When doubts are growing, we must withstand them with confidence in hope. Therefore, I solemnly declare that Luxembourg has officially recognized Palestin.
Prehistory:
- The recognition of Palestine’s statehood was stated by the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Australia, Norway, Ireland and Spain. Portugal and nearly ten more plans to join.
- French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barro stated that the recognition of the Palestinian state is a “big day for the world” and “an important diplomatic victory for France.”
- During his speech at the High Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian issue, the UN Secretary General Anthony Guterres stated that the deprivation of Palestinians of the right to his own state would contribute to the spread of radicalism around the world.
- He stressed that the implementation of the principle of “two states” is the only viable way to reach peace between Israel and Palestine.
