He noted that the basis of the normal expansion process is the principle that the promotion of the country depends on its achievements, and now it is supersted through Hungary – because Ukraine meets the criteria, but Budapest manipulates the veto.
“We strive to receive 27 votes, but so far we have happened, we are looking for alternative solutions,” Budris said.
He confirmed that it was a so -called “plan B” to overcome the Hungarian veto.
”We cannot be hostages (veto Hungary. – “EP”), and there are ways to go forward. Even during Denmark, we have the opportunity and time to move to informal stages that will be formally finalized a little later. The current methodology of expansion allows this approach, ” – said Kiastutis Budris.
“These steps will demonstrate our respect for the EU rules, and will help the reform process in Ukraine. It will also allow us to preserve the resources mobilized by the European Commission, as well as keep the attention of Member States,” he added.
“I do not know what the motives are (veto by the Hungarian government. -” EP “), but I will not be in the position of the weak and I will not be in the position of the hostage. And we have a solution to how to avoid it,” – said the head of the Foreign Ministry of Lithuania.
Budris noted that it is optimistic about the fact that Member States would support this path.
”It is not about Ukraine that there are some new words and statements about Ukraine, and it is definitely not about creating the illusion that we “do something, in spite of everything.” No! It is about preserving the impulse in the movement of Ukraine to the EU. It is about continuing to do what really matters – that is, reforms in Ukraine and preparation of the EU for expansion … The informal process of negotiation can become such a mechanism, “he said.
Budris also answered the question of “Euro truth” about whether the plan B should be launched now, in the fall of 2025.
”Of course. The momentum is now. It is dangerous to delay it. I have seen it many times … To keep a political focus where it is a difficult task, “said the head of the Foreign Ministry of Lithuania.
