Violation of the airspace of Estonia: Lithuania caused “on the carpet” of representative of the Russian Federation

Details: The Russian representative has reported that Lithuania considers these incidents a gross violation of international law, through which Russia escalated tensions in the Baltic Sea.

Therefore, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry requires the Russian Federation to take “all measures” to prevent repetition of such provocations in the future.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry also summoned a representative of the Russian Embassy because of this incident.

What was before:

  • On Friday, September 19, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonia’s airspace over the Finnish bay and remained there for 12 minutes. NATO reported that they had intercepted aircraft.
  • Estonia Prime Minister Kristen Michal said his country had initiated NATO consultations under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty.
  • US President Donald Trump “did not like” this incident.
