According to the newspaper, Lapin will be appointed assistant to the head of Tatarstan. He will be responsible for working with participants of the war against Ukraine and their families, as well as for social and medical rehabilitation and integration of the military after returning.
Alexander Lapin was born in 1964 in Kazan. In 2017, he was the chief of staff of the Russian troops in Syria, and later headed the Central Military District of the Russian Army. In 2022 he commanded the Center in the war against Ukraine. After the retreat of the Russian troops from Liman, he was sharply criticized by Chechnya Kadyrov.
Later Lapin worked in the command of the Land Forces of the Russian Federation, and later headed the Leningrad Military District and the North Group. In this direction, Russian troops fought for Vovchansk, maintained defense at the border and conducted operations in the Kursk region, and created the so -called “buffer zone” in Sumy and Kharkiv region.
In August 2025, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced that the new commander of the North group became Colonel-General Yevgeny Nikiforov.
