In Japan, work is replaced by people in warehouses because of the aging of the population

In the conditions of rapid aging of the population, Japan is testing logistics to compensate for labor deficiency and maintain the speed of delivery. Financial Times writes about it.

In the Amazon warehouse in the city of Chibi, the work already exceeds the number of 2000 employees, and the warehouse capacity is 40% higher than in ordinary facilities. The company also showed a new automatic packing machine and a sorting system that can collect multiple products in one parcel.

However, according to experts, leaving robots outside for delivery is still difficult. Demand for truck drivers in Japan is rapidly falling due to the aging of the population: according to Nomura Research Institute, by 2030, the number of drivers will be reduced by a third – to 480,000 people. Amazon is considering the localization of automation, moving from large centers to smaller delivery points closer to customers where work will be able to participate more actively in packaging.

As part of a global strategy, Amazon launches an artificial intelligence of Deepfleet, which manages all work in warehouses and increases their speed by 10%. At the same time, Japanese logistics companies, such as Nippon Express, are introducing new technologies more carefully because of the variety of goods, customer needs and the high price of integration. Most decisions are still demonstration and companies evaluate their economic benefits and prospects.

In 2024, the warehouse automation market in Japan reached $ 1.28 billion, and it is expected that by 2030 it will increase by an average of more than 21% annually. The main income generates “iron”, while the software segment develops the fastest.

The main obstacles to the rapid introduction of robots-the high cost of integration into existing warehouses, complex architecture of buildings (small areas, multilevel, uneven planning), as well as slow development of E-commerce, which in Japan occupies less than 10% of the retail market-much less than in Europe.

In Japan, logistics companies are preparing for the lack of employees and even considering the hiring of foreign trucks, as the number of young people in the country is constantly decreasing. Similar difficulties due to the aging of the population are also experienced by the service. Japanese cafes already operate special work-run works in the form of seals.
