Tesla stopped selling the cheapest version of Cybertruck because no one is buying it

Vlad Cherevko I have been interested in all kinds of electronics and technologies since the early 2000s. I like to play computer games and understand the work of different gadgets. I regularly monitor the news of the technology in the world and write materials about it.

Tesla removed the most accessible modification of Cybertruck electric pickup in less than five months after its launch, Electrek reports.

The rear -wheel drive model (RWD) was presented in April 2025 as a cheaper alternative to the full -wheel drive version, which cost from $ 80 thousand. The price of RWD was $ 70 thousand, but to reduce the cost, the manufacturer removed a number of key functions.

In particular, the RWD version lacks active pneumatic suspension, a motorized lid of the freight compartment and a socket in the body. In addition, the car received only one motor instead of two. Such changes made the model not attractive to buyers, and the company decided to completely remove it from the online configural without replacing it.

Launching this version was Tesla’s attempt to increase Cybertruck sales that were much lower than expectations. Despite the statements about more than a million previous bookings and production plans up to 250 thousand cars per year (with a potential increase of up to 500 thousand), the actual sales volume is about 20 thousand units per year.

The reason for the low demand was higher prices and worse characteristics of serial models than the initial promises. Analysts suggest that Tesla can upgrade Cybertruck in 2026, bringing its parameters to the initially declared to check if the interest of buyers will increase.
