Steinmeier stressed that Portugal and Germany have “close friendship” and common values. He recalled the threat of freedom in Europe through the Russian war and called on Europeans to act as a single front.

He noted that Portugal and Germany are allies in the EU, NATO and the UN, as well as share fundamental values - peace, democracy, freedom of speech and human rights.
The Portuguese President also quoted the Nobel Peace laureate Willy Brandt: “Peace is not everything, but without peace everything is nothing”, having received applause of the audience for these words.
The meeting of the two presidents took place as part of the visit of Rebel de Ashes to Germany, which completes its mandate in 2026. In addition to political statements, both leaders emphasized the importance of bilateral relations, including cooperation in tourism.
