The study published in Nature describes minerals in the sappphire Canyon sample, among which were phosphates and iron sulfides – compounds that are often formed on Earth through microorganisms. On the surface of the rock, the Perseverance Pixl and Sherloc tools recorded colored “spots”, which scientists called “leopard”, which can be the result of interaction of organic matter and sedimentary deposits.
At the same time, researchers emphasize that minerals can be formed by non -biological, for example, under the influence of high temperatures or acidity. However, no traces of such processes in Bright Angel were found. This makes biological interpretation more likely, although there is no final confirmation yet.
Interestingly, these possible traces of life are preserved in some of the youngest sedimentary rocks investigated by the mission. This may mean that living conditions existed on Mars longer than it was thought.
Since landing in 2021, Perseverance has collected 27 rock specimens, and conducts experiments that prepare the soil for future missions with delivery of samples to land and departure people on Mars.
