“Frankly speaking … confiscation of these Russian sovereign assets is not really an option for Belgium,” he said.
According to Prevo, the confiscation of Russian assets from Belgian banks will jeopardize the country’s reputation as the Center for Financial Services. He also added that this step is dangerous for the European Union.
“It would be a very bad signal for other countries in the world. Some of them also have assets, sovereign assets in Brussels or in other places of Europe,” the Foreign Minister of Belgium explained.
The diplomat stressed that the confiscation of income from frozen assets of the Russian Federation will also “undermine trust in the euro”. He also abandoned the alternative plan to transfer assets to a separate investment fund.
Prevoy noted that Brussels would join the security guarantees for Ukraine within the framework of a “decisive coalition”. In addition, he assured that Belgium would hand over planes to Ukraine and help with the demining of the territory.
In which the Russian Federation can return its frozen assets in the EUEarlier, the EU Supreme Representative, Kai Callas, said Russia will be able to return its assets, which are currently blocked in the European Union, only after paying reparations to Ukraine. According to her, even the ceasefire will not affect it.
Callas noted that despite the active diplomatic efforts to negotiate between Ukraine and Russia at the highest level, Moscow shows that “does not want peace”.
