During the press conference, Bettel stated that he came to Odessa from Moldova, where he said, “there is no will to talk about the future of one country without another.”
“We believe – and after those discussions, too, that the future is in common. And that one country cannot be used against another, as Russia would like to do,” he said, referring to Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

- It is known that the actual beginning of Ukraine’s negotiations on admission is blocked by the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who actively uses Ukraine’s accession to the EU in its domestic political interests.
- In particular, the Hungarian authorities staged a manipulative survey of citizens as to whether they agree to Ukraine’s accession to the EU, and claims that 95% voted against.
- The veto of Hungary raised the issue of the “break” of the package of Ukraine and Moldova, so as not to worsen the position of Moldova President Mia Sandu before the autumn parliamentary elections. However, the EU is believed in the ability to overcome Orban’s veto shortly after the beginning of Denmark’s presidency in the EU Council, so this scenario has been avoided.
- Recently, the head of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavsky stated that his country is against the separation of Ukraine and Moldova on the way to the EU.
