“History has painfully taught us that when decisions are made without the participation of those whose life is put on the map, the result is not peace, but betrayal,” she noted and as an example of the 1938 Munich Agreement, as well as the Yalta agreement in 1945.
She reminded that for her, as for a person born in Czechoslovakia, it is not just to give in a textbook of history, “but open wounds.”
“Maybe we are standing at a similar crossroads. This week will end with an unexpected summit in Alaska, who has long been Putin.
She stressed that European leaders will be aware of danger and work urgently, and a virtual meeting of European leaders, which will take place on August 13 – is part of these efforts.
“We all want peace. The most – Ukrainians. But there can be no peace that rewards the aggressor. How can one agree on justice with who orders to bomb cities, hospitals, stations daily?”
Mervae emphasized: the EU has not left Ukraine since the start of a full -scale invasion, and recognized that even in the war, Ukraine took huge steps towards joining the European family.
“That is why Ukraine and Europe should be at any table where the future of peace on our continent is decided. If the summit on Alaska is to be the beginning of peace, it should bring more than simply the silence of weapons. It must guarantee the safety, sovereignty and the right of Ukraine to decide its future on its own,” she emphasized.
The mother -in -law called for the leaders of the democratic world to remember Munich and Yalta, and to ensure that history would not be repeated.
