This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, explaining that Moscow’s proposals are in fact reducing the requirement to withdraw Ukrainian troops from controlled territories in exchange for the termination of the offensive.
In his opinion, Donbas for Russia is a bridgehead for preparing a new invasion, as the Crimea became a bridgehead for an attack to the south of Ukraine.
Zelensky stressed that any discussion of territories is impossible without security guarantees, otherwise the abandonment of about 9 thousand square kilometers (about 30% of Donetsk region) will only facilitate Russia preparation for new aggression against Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions.
He also noted that the idea of territorial concessions sounded from US Special Representative Steve Witcoff as a compromise on both sides, but this, he said, reflects Putin’s wishes first of all. The President suggested that in the event of such conditions, the United States under Donald Trump’s presidency can impose sanctions on both Ukraine and Russia, removing them only after resolving the territorial issue.
Zelensky emphasized that he did not receive any proposal that would guarantee that the new war would not begin, and recalled that Putin was not in the size of the territory, but in the destruction of Ukrainian statehood.
Trump is also disappointed in “friendly” conversations with Putin.
