The Chornobyl series: HBO paid compensation to the Ukrainian Andriy Prymachenko. What is known?

“The HBO agreement is concluded,”-wrote Ukrainian director Andriy Prymachenko on August 1, 2025 on his Facebook page. Six years after the premiere of the Chornobyl Ministry, he managed to prove the authorship of one of the episodes used by the creators of the project – HBO.

The court ended with a settlement with the payment of one -time financial reward, says Primachenko forbes Ukraine. He does not disclose the amount of compensation and payment terms because of the privacy of the contract.

The creators of the project were accused of copyright violations. The case in court lasted since November 2023. The interests of Primachenko were represented by the Ukrainian law company LAW Net and the American Doniger / Burromhs, which led the whole process in the US. “The court in the US is a difficult and expensive business, especially if you are a citizen of Ukraine during the war,” he says.

When Priymachenko with lawyers just started working on the case, the world froze under the pressure of a pandemic, he says. In 2022, the case came to the background because of the full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine.

“It was necessary to provide a large amount of information and documents and convey it to American lawyers, since our legislation systems are different,” the director describes the process.

In the end, the parties reached a settlement agreement in the Southern District Court of Southern District. According to the Treaty with HBO, Prymachenko was paid a one -time financial reward. He does not disclose the amount of compensation.

“From the very beginning, my goal was to restore justice,” Prymachenko said. “Whatever the country is, you cannot take another’s work and pretend that nothing happened.”
