On August 8, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Moldova referred to the Greece the new request for extradition of the fugitive oligarch Vlad Plakhotniuk.

Details: The new request for extradition concerns three criminal cases in which Plahotniuk has the status of the accused for particularly serious crimes, says the Prosecutor General’s Office of Moldova.

They explained that this is necessary to observe the right of specialization, according to which the prosecution is liable, is possible only for acts that have become a basis for the request for extradition.

“Given the considerable amount of documents that needed to be translated in accordance with the requirements of the current international treaties, as well as at the request of the Greek side, the preparation of reference documents required considerable effort and additional time,” – explained the Prosecutor’s Office of Moldova.

Prehistory:

  • In Greece, on July 22, a fugitive oligarch, known in the past as “Lord of Moldova”, Vlad Plahotniuk, as well as former deputy Konstantin Tsutsu.
  • Plahotniuk fled the country in June 2019. The politician lived in the United States for a while, but in January 2020, his stay was found undesirable there. According to unconfirmed information, he was later in Northern Cyprus.
  • Last week, Plahotniuk made a public statement in which he spoke of his intention to return to Moldova to prove his innocence.
  • The Court of Appeal of Athens will consider Moldova’s request for extradition of the fugitive oligarch on August 13.
