Scientists at the University of Illinois in Urban-Shampein have introduced a new modular architecture to scales superconducting quantum processors. It allows Connect individual cubit devices to a larger network while keeping the quantum properties of the system.

According to the leading author of Wolfgang Pfaff, the study is based on a common idea: for further development of superconducting quantum calculations, it is necessary to move on to a modular approach. This strategy is already supported by large players, including IBM.

The key task was to create a simple way of connecting cubes, which does not lead to significant losses of signal or energy when transmitting quantum information. An important requirement was to easily connect, disconnect and configure modules.

Researchers used a high quality superconducting coaxial cable that acts as a resonator-coax (Bus-Resonator). Each cubit is connected to the cable through a special desk.

The command was able to realize the effective interaction between the cubit and the cable, as well as between several cubes connected to one tire. In addition, researchers have created a new type of logical element (GATE), which is based on the speed transformation of the frequency that is possible for transmon cubes.

During the tests, the architecture allowed to connect and separate modules without damage and without significant losses on quantum logical operations. This opens the path to building scaled quantum systems with the ability to connect new modules in the process, PFAFF notes.

Now the team is working to increase the number of connected elements and the compatibility of architecture with quantum correction of errors.

Recall that in July physicists from the University of Aalto set a new record of coherence for transmon Kubita – more than 1 ms.
