On July 20, Ukrainians pay tribute to Elijah Proproky-one of the most revered figures in Christianity. Since 2023, this holiday has been officially postponed to a new date – it was celebrated on August 2.
The day has received deep popular importance, because, according to legend, it is from this time that the summer ends, the weather changes and it is time to take care of the family and help the needy.
Celebrate Illin Day in a family circle, with guests and a table. In addition to worship services and processions, parishioners observe ancient customs: they do not work in the field, do not catch fish and strictly avoid bathing in open water.
The latter is explained by both folk beliefs about “unclean power” and common sense – during this period water can already be cold and dangerous to health. It is believed that “Elijah has made a little need”, so swim.
Recall that in the second summer month, the new Orthodox calendar has several commemorative dates and significant events.
Also in July 2025, the Orthodox celebrates the Day of the Holy Apostolic Grand Duke Vladimir and the Assumption of St. Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin.
