These arrangements were reached during a meeting in New York, which was attended by representatives of trade unions of football players from all over the world. It is worth noting that the FIFPRO Global Union did not participate in the pervasions, so it is not yet known whether the arrangements will be valid.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other officials of the organization met in New York with representatives of players from all over the world. FIFA called these discussions “progressive”, adding that players’ health is a “main priority”.
“There is a consensus that there should be at least 72 hours of rest between matches, and players should have a rest/vacation period of at least 21 days at the end of each season,” FIFA said. “This period should be regulated individually by each club and players, depending on their game calendar and taking into account the current collective agreements.”
If these standards are legally fixed, there will be problems because of a large number of matches. Strict compliance with the 72-hour period can cause significant adjustments to the schedule of some games and television contracts. FIFA did not specify how it would work in practice. European teams involved in the Europa League late on Thursday nights usually hold the internal championship matches next Sunday. Given the harsh 72-hour break, they will have to wait until Monday to play the championship match.
It is currently unknown whether the FIFPRO union will legally consolidate these standards, taking into account the possible problems with the calendar in the championships.
