MIT researchers have presented a fully autonomous robotic SI system for measuring the key electrical properties of new semiconductor materials. It can Open the way to more efficient solar panels, sensors and electronics.
The system uses a contact probe to measure photo conductivity – changes in the electrical properties of the material under the influence of light.
Through the integration of machine learning and materials science, robot is able to choose the best points for scanning. The special route planning algorithm provides the shortest path between these points, reducing time spent.
“This is a breakthrough for contact measurements. If you need to touch the material – it should be quickly, exactly and without loss, ” – comments the author of the study Tonio Buonassis.
In the test run, the robot made more than 3000 unique dimensions, identifying areas with degradation and “hot zones” with high conductivity. This accuracy opens the path to the creation of new perovskit materials and more efficient components for green energy.
The next MIT goal is a fully autonomous laboratory for opening new materials. The development was supported by First Solar, Eni, Doe, NSF and others. The results were published in Science Advances.
Recall that scientists from Northeastn University have demonstrated the ability to change the electrical conductivity of the material on request, which can open the way to replace silicon in new generation devices.
