He stressed that the Russians not only increase the pressure on the front, but also press on civilian populations through attacks on civilian objects and “psychologically put in such a situation when it will demand from their government to end the war at any cost.”
Negotiations with RussiaAfter more than a 3-year break, Russia and Ukraine held negotiations in Istanbul on May 16 and June 2. As a result of the negotiations, the parties decided to hold a series of exchanges of prisoners of war as well as bodies of dead soldiers. However, these negotiations did not move towards the ceasefire.
Subsequently, the Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov stated that the pace of negotiations on the end of the war in Ukraine depend on the position of Kiev, the effectiveness of US mediation and the situation on the ground.
In his turn, the head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov stated that “international legal recognition of new territorial realities” that arose after illegal annexation of Crimea, as well as Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions is needed for peace.
