Dorsy compared Bitchat to the IRC-Chats of the late 1990s.
According to the project documentation, BitChat is a fully decentralized network without central servers. You do not need accounts, mail or phone number for registration. Messages are stored only in the memory of the device and do not get to centralized databases. Additional protection provides through encryption.
Each device on the BitChat network at the same time acts as a client and a repeater. Messages can “jump” between devices to get to remote users. Bluetooth range is about 30 meters, and individual clusters combine the city nodes. Large messages are divided into fragments of 500 bytes.
The messenger is focused on conferences and in emergencies where Internet access is limited or unstable. In the future, the command plans to add Wi-Fi support to transmit large files.
Recall that a participant of Haccoon Bitcoin 2025 Official Hackathon presented an open infrastructure for bitcoin transactions called Darkwire, which uses radio instead of the Internet and cellular communication.
