The Minister of Development, Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dus indicated that in several regions of the world, “not least in Ukraine, Sudan, Gas and Yemen, human suffering are huge.” The situation, he said, has worsened after reducing the global benefits of the United States.
“Therefore, Sweden decides to speak forward with a comprehensive redistribution of the priorities of the assistance budget for 2025. We allocate 1.67 billion Swedish crowns (about 150 million euros – ed.) to support Ukraine and to save lives around the world. Sweden cannot cover US abbreviations, but we have to do everything possible to support Ukraine and save lives, ”Dus said.
The redistribution of priorities, which is carried out, affects all regions except Ukraine and territories around it. The thematic assistance is also undergoing contractions. The Government notes that changes are made so as not to violate previously concluded agreements.
Sweden, in particular, gradually abolishes regional cooperation in Asia and Oceania, seeking to move from assistance in the region to trade relations.
The government states that the allocation of funds is largely due to the desire to continue the support of Ukraine, which is “existentially important” for Europe.
“Ukraine is the main priority of Sweden in the field of development and foreign policy assistance. In order to resist Russia, which does not hesitate to fire playgrounds, hospitals, schools and homes, increased support is needed. Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, but also for the freedom of Europe, ”Dus added.
In May Stockholm announced a new package military assistance for Ukraine worth 4.8 billion Swedish crowns (about 443 million euros).
