Scientists from Northeastn University have demonstrated the ability to change the electrical conductivity of the material on request. This discovery can open the way to replace silicon in New generation devices and significant speeds of efficiency. The work was published in Nature.
Unlike traditional chips that combine individual leading and insulating materials, a new approach allows you to create a universal component that can be switched on. This simplifies architecture, reduces energy loss and opens the path to even more miniaturization.
“Modern processors operate in the gigertic range. [Нова розробка] It provides switching speed that allows you to move to the terages, ”explained the leader of the study Alberto de la Torre.
Researchers have used the technique of managed heating and cooling (“thermal hardening”), which allows to start electronic switching almost without delay.
The 1T-TAS₂ material retains a programmed state of months at temperatures close to room-earlier such effects were only available under cryogenic cooling conditions.
This is not the first attempt to use laser impulses to change the conduction of quantum materials, but for the first time it was possible to achieve a stable effect at realistic temperatures.
According to scientists, such control is the key to creating electronics from a new class of materials, which works on orders faster and more efficiently with the available equipment.
“We have reached a level where a new paradigm is required for a significant breakthrough in the speed of data processing and storage. Quantum calculations are one of the directions, the other is innovations in materials. And this is exactly what we do, ”says the co -author of the study physicist Gregory Fieu.
Recall that in June, researchers from Shanghai University used a quantum computer to factorize the 22-bit integer within the RSA algorithm.
