Details: Poroshenko said that he did not want to criticize Zelensky, but only give him advice. In particular, he called on the experience of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhah, who recently convinced US President Donald Trump to participate in the Iran nuclear program.
He also hinted that after imposing sanctions against him, he tries to say Zelensky: “I am not your enemy”: “I stand with you side by side. Not because I do not have any claims to you-they will appear later, after the war. But now unity is a key factor in our success.”
Thus, in February 2025 he was banned from access to bank accounts, traveling abroad and attending parliamentary sessions.
Poroshenko told representatives of a foreign edition that there is a “serious problem of communication” between American and Ukrainian diplomatic teams, which is based on the distrust of Americans with OP Andriy Yermak, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA Oksana Markarova.
It is reported that Poroshenko tried to establish ties with the Trump team by visiting Washington in February, where he met with US officials and participated in a national prayer breakfast, at which Trump made a speech.
Poroshenko complains that sanctions do not allow him to travel abroad and “prevent him from supporting the Ukrainian army.”
According to him, “the purpose of sanctions is to prevent his participation in the presidential elections”, the possibility of which was discussed this year during the ceasefire negotiations.
He also stated that the imposition of sanctions against him should be a warning for every potential candidate: “Today Poroshenko, Tomorrow Zaluzhny, after tomorrow anyone. This is authoritarianism.”
Prehistory:
- On February 13, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed sanctions against Petro Poroshenko. He was assigned 17 sanctions, mainly economic. It is about blocking assets, trade restrictions, prohibition on defense purchases and land purchase. Poroshenko was also deprived of state awards, forbidden to participate in privatization, use radio frequencies and send funds abroad. The sanctions are imposed indefinitely.
- The Presidential Decree explains these actions by the fact that Poroshenko, “posed a threat to national security and promoted terrorist activity.” Poroshenko himself called sanctions illegal, politically motivated and sued.
- In May, the National Bank recognized Poroshenko with a “unwell business reputation”. That same month, the court in Vinnytsia region began the case of the distribution of joint property of Poroshenkov – by more than UAH 17.1 billion.
- The European Solidarity Party stated that the claim for property distribution is a joint tactics for the protection of the family “from Zelensky’s attempts to block Petro Poroshenko, the opportunity to finance assistance to the Armed Forces and political activities.”
- On May 16, the court closed the case because it did not find the subject of the dispute.
