Deepmind has introduced Alphagenome – an artificial intelligence tool that can predict how minimal changes in DNA sequence affect gene expression, genes, In particular, the synthesis of RNA and proteins. About it reports Science.
Alphagenome is able to analyze a fragment of DNA to a million pairs of nitrogenous bases. The model can predict where genes begin and end, what forms of RNA they create and in what quantity. Its main feature is the ability to model the influence of specific mutations: how expression changes, what proteins are formed and with what consequences.
The solution is based on the principles underlying Alphafold – a breakthrough in the prediction of protein structure. Unlike predecessors, which covered only about 2% of the genome of protein-coding areas, Alphagenome first analyzes the full sequence, including the non-coating regions responsible for regulation.

The model has been trained in volume open databases accumulated over decades. It takes into account the experimental results on the expression of genes in human and mouse cells, the activity of transcription factors and the influence of individual mutations on RNA.
In Alphagenome’s tests, most existing tools have overcome: it was ahead of 22 of 24 models in the recognition of functional DNA functional areas, as well as 24 out of 26 to predict the effects of mutations.
Researchers expect Alphagenome will greatly simplify the search for genetic causes of disease. For example, when comparing the genomes of tumor and healthy patients of patients, the model allows for only a few important changes for further study, instead of analyzing thousands of mutations.
The tool can also help synthetic biologists create new genes or genomic structures with projected properties.
Alphagenome is already available for academic use, and after reviewing the article, the DeepMind team plans the output code and the model’s scales for open access. The company assures that the tool is safe and has passed an external rating for biosecurity.
Recall that in June the project started to create a human synthetic DNA of the human synthetic genome.
