Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakkhna noted that the corresponding decision is due to the deterioration of the situation with security in the region in connection with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and is based on significant considerations of national security.
According to the Minister, even after leaving the Convention, Estonia will continue to ensure full compliance with international humanitarian law and protection of civilian people, and will continue to support projects for humanitarian demining and assisting victims of armed conflicts.
In turn, Lithuania also informed about the transfer of documents to the UN reporting from the Ottawa Convention.
Literally from the statement of the Foreign Ministry of Lithuania: “The denunciation of the Ottawa Convention will strengthen the effect of restraint against Russia and increase the defensive potential of the Lithuanian armed forces. By denounced the Ottawa Convention, we send a clear signal that we will protect the territory of Lithuania and NATO by all possible means.”
Details: The sovereign decision to denounce the Ottawa Convention of Lithuania also informed all states that they are the parties to this Convention.
Exit from the Convention shall enter into force six months after the relevant official notification to the UN.
