US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in an interview with Politico that new sanctions against Russia could harm potential negotiations, and assured that Trump “know the right time and place” for their introduction.

Details: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders hope to persuade Trump on Wednesday, during the NATO Summit in the Hague, to impose new sanctions against Russia, as Vladimir Putin repeatedly rejected US ceasefire proposals.

“If we do what everyone here wants here, namely we will interfere and defeat them with new sanctions, we will probably lose the opportunity to negotiate with them about ceasefire, and who will talk to them then?” Said Rubio.

He added that Trump “know the right time and place” for new economic events. According to Rubio, the presidential administration works with Congress to ensure Trump is appropriate flexibility.

But when the United States decides to impose sanctions, he added, it will mean that a window to negotiate with Russia will probably close. “If he does it, it will be almost a recognition that the negotiations will not happen in the near future,” Rubio said.

Since negotiations with Russia came to a dead end, Rubio said that Moscow believes that he could achieve his territorial goals on the battlefield – Washington disagrees with.

“Our feeling is that the Russians will try to reach on the battlefield what they demanded at the table of negotiations, namely the preservation of the administrative borders of certain territories, etc. We believe that it will be much more difficult for them to achieve this than they think,” Rubio added.
