The authorities were captured in the first weeks of a full -scale invasion, and in October 2022 it was transferred to colony # 7 in Pakino. According to RSF, Dmitry Khiluk was brought there in May 2023. In August of that year, they spent a day in the same chamber. On that day, the journalist did not say a word.

According to Vlad, the camera # 8, in which Khiluk was held, is located in the third – the strictest block. There, according to the former prisoners, Ukrainian military and civilians are systematically beating and starving.

One of the former prisoners, who spent a year in the camera with Khiluk, told RSF that the journalist was not recognized – he weighed no more than 45 kg. Vlad also considers this assessment relevant.

“After three years in Russian prisons, Dmitry Khiluk is still mocking and deprivation. Despite the exchanges of prisoners between countries, it is unclear why a journalist with chronic exhaustion is still in prison. We demand his immediate and unconditional release until it was too late,” said Arno.

According to the authorities, the conditions of detention in the colony improved a little at the end of 2024 after a visit of a delegation headed by the Russian Human Rights Tatiana Moskalkova. But already in 2025 the situation worsened again-nutrition became even worse, access to medical care-limited, in particular due to regular scabies.

According to RSF estimates, about 300 Ukrainians can still be in the colony. In total, at least 29 Ukrainian journalists are kept in Russia.
