The European Commission has approved the first list of 13 strategic projections on EU strategic raw materials aimed at diversifying the sources of supply and improving the EU economic security, as well as stimulating local value added in third countries.

As reports the European Commission’s Press Service, Seven projects are located in Canada, Greenland, Kazakhstan, Norbia, Serbia, Ukraine, Zambia, with which the EU has a strategic partnership in the raw material chains of added value, and the rest – in Brazil, Madagascar, Malawi, New Celiadia, South Africa.

Ten of these strategic projects relate to the strategic raw materials required for the production of electric vehicles, batteries and batteries such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite.

The Ukrainian project is the Balachiv Graphite deposit, the project of the company “Development of Pobuzhye” from the BGV group.

“It is not just a recognition for us – it is a responsibility and a strategic mission. Ukraine is able to be a reliable supplier of critical minerals, including graphite, which plays a key role in the production of batteries, electronics and defense technologies. The acquisition of such a status opens new opportunities for international financing, ”BGV said.

The selected projects will receive coordinated support from the European Commission. They are estimated that they require total capital investments in the amount of 5.5 billion euros for starting work.

This initiative complements the list of 47 EU strategic projects, adopted on March 25, 2025. In total, all 60 strategic projects will increase the competitiveness of the EU industry, in particular in sectors such as electricity, renewable energy, defense and aerospace industry. These projects are the first results of the implementation of the critical raw material law that came into force in May 2024.
