Prior to the catastrophe Kryvyi Rih received water from the Kakhovka reservoir. After its loss, the city depends on degraded and insufficient alternative sources.

In partnership with KP “Kryvbasvodokanal” and the local authorities, the IOM will update pumping stations, replace pipelines and increase the efficiency of water treatment plants. Over the next two years, the project will cover up to 700,000 inhabitants of Kryvyi Rih, including about 80,000 internally displaced persons.
The Kakhovsky Dam, occupied by Russia at the beginning of a full -scale invasion, was destroyed in the morning of June 6, 2023. This caused dozens of dead and large -scale destruction: 620 square kilometers were flooded in four regions – Kherson, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia.
The assessment of the consequences of the 2023 disaster, prepared by the UN and the Government of Ukraine with the participation of the World Bank and the EU, estimated losses of $ 14 billion.
After Russia has undermined the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, the EU used a civil protection mechanism to assist Ukraine. The first contributions made Germany, Austria and Lithuania.
Germany offered 5 thousand water filters and 56 generators, Austria – 20 water tanks and 10 drilling pumps. In addition, Lithuania and Germany were also offered tents, beds and blankets.
