The International Jury noted the editorial efforts to investigate the Russian Crimes in Ukraine, choosing the material of Valery Jehoshina and Kira Tolstyakov’s “face of Russian occupation: mass identification of soldiers who tortured civilians and changed Ukraine to the finals.” These investigations from the cycle of a de -industrial part of Kharkiv region record the testimony of the affected Ukrainians during and after the occupation of the region and determines who from the Russian military could be involved in torture and injuries.
“Having analyzed thousands of names, the investigators focused on the awarded for“ work with the civilian population ”in Balakliya. After careful research, they managed to identify several Russian servicemen and classified FSB staff responsible for organizing a systematic campaign of intimidation and torture. The second investigation from this series revealed the use of banned anti -personnel mines. Based on data from Russian documents-in particular, thanks to the engineers who have installed mines and orders given to the Russian sapper regiments-the plot outlines a variety of types of ammunition, from which numerous civilians were killed, and who make Ukraine the most replaced country on land today.
In addition to the main authors of Valeria Yehoshina and Kira Tolstyakova, they also joined the material: the executive producer “Scheme” Natalka Sedletska, operators Kirill Lazarevich and Boris Trotsenko, director Pavlo Melnyk, graphic designer Maxim Asika, Multimedia Editor.
In total, more than 410 materials from 97 countries have been submitted to the competition.
“The jury noted a significant increase in the quality and ambitiousness of the work provided, despite the increased risks and challenges faced by investigative journalists in some of the most dangerous places in the world,” said Sheil Koronel, Director of the Stabile Committee Center at Columbia.
The winners will be announced at the 14th Global Conference of Investigation Journalistic (GiJC25)-the main international meeting of investigative journalists and data journalists, which will take place on November 20-24 in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
