For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the SBU exposed agents of military intelligence of Hungary. They were spying in Transcarpathia.

“For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the Security Service exposed the agent network of Hungary’s military intelligence, which carried out espionage at the detriment of our country,” the statement reads.
The task of this cell was to collect information on military protection of the Transcarpathian region, the search for vulnerable places in the land and air defense of the region, as well as the study of socio-political views of the locals: in particular, the scenarios of their behavior, if Hungarian troops enter the territory of the region.
According to the results of complex measures in Transcarpathia, the SBU detained two agents from the network of the Hungarian special service. According to the investigation, the curator of both defendants was a personnel employee of Hungary’s military intelligence, whose person was already identified by the Security Service.
One of its agents was a 40-year-old soldier from the Berehiv district, who was recruited and transferred to the “waiting regime” in 2021.
According to counterintelligence and investigators of the SBU, the curator “activated” this agent in September 2024. Then the traitor got the task: to study the moods of the local population and get the following information:
- what will be the reaction of the military and civilian population of Transcarpathia if the peacekeeping contingent, including the Hungarian military, enters the region;
- what military equipment and weapons can be purchased in the Black Market of Transcarpathia;
- What is the situation with the migration of the Hungarian population in the region;
- which military forces are located in Transcarpathia, or many transport and combat vehicles;
- how much law enforcement agencies are completed and their number, etc.
It is documented that after that the agent personally explored the placement of defense forces and coordinates of the C-300 anti-aircraft missile complexes in the region.
After collecting the intelligence, he left for Hungary to report to the curator. To cross the border, the traitor issued a certificate of the caregiver by a sick parent who needs treatment in foreign institutions.
According to the case file, during the meeting, the Hungarian intelligence officer transferred the cash to the agent, which were intended for the completion of the tasks. Including the traitor searched for a network of informants. The SBU found that the resident tried to recruit at least two people.
By forming an agent network, foreign intelligence hoped to expand the range of information, including obtaining data from the front and front regions.
In March this year, the SBU counterintelligence documented the second meeting with the curator. This time he received a special software for conspiracy communication.
Among the new tasks of the traitor was the identification of service cars belonging to representatives of security and defense forces in the Transcarpathian region. In addition, the resident had to find and transmit the Hungarian intelligence service on the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces in the war and current events from the front line, and has already selected appropriate contact in defense forces.
Another detained is the former serviceman of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine, which was dismissed from the unit in 2025. According to information, it was among its tasks to inform the Hungarian special service about the availability of aircraft and helicopters in the Transcarpathian region, as well as about the defense systems of the military unit where it was served.
The counterintelligence of the SBU has documented each step of the Hungarian agency and detained the persons involved in places of residence. During the search, they seized phones and other material evidence of subversive activities.
Investigators of the Security Service were informed by the defendants about suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (State betrayal committed in the conditions of martial law). The attackers are in custody. They are threatened with life imprisonment with the confiscation of property.
Earlier in the Kyiv region, the DBR reported suspicion of the commander of the military unit, which illegally issued combat payments for more than 7 million UAH. The suspect allowed the unreasonable accrual of subordinate combat extras.
Earlier, the State Bureau of Investigation completed the pre -trial investigation into the deputy commander of one of the military units of the Kirovograd region, which purchased low -quality meat canned meat for almost $ 1 million.
