Valery Shevchuk studied at the Faculty of History and Philosophical and Philosophical Faculty of Kyiv University (now Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv). Soon, in the 1960s, he began to write his own works – poetry and prose. The writer is considered one of the founders of the Zhytomyr prose school.
After graduation, he was drafted into the army and returned home in 1965, at a time when mass political arrests began among the Ukrainian intelligentsia. He was at the Ukraine cinema, protesting against mass repression.

”I am convinced that the artist does not create the lives of heroes, he is only a tool for such creation, but creates their unknown force, which we do not know how to know. So, the ruler of my creation I was not and more than once wondered what happened so”, – said the writer in an interview.
