The Government Commissioner for State Language Protection Taras Kremin has rejected the statements of the US President’s Special Representative in the Middle East Steve Witcoff that Russia could maintain control of the five regions of Ukraine because of their Russian -speaking.
Kremin said this on Radio Liberty.
“I want to warn that talking about language, especially our allies, does not correspond to both our international agreements and the treaties we really have,” Kremin said.
He recalled that on March 1, US President Donald Trump signed a decree giving English the status of a single state.
“To whom not to him [Трампу] To know how important it is to keep the national unity and catholicity of its state, although it developed differently and in some aspects is even very related, as my hometown Nikolaev, in fact, a lot of such comparisons, ”the Language Ombudsman added.
The Ombudsman stressed that “what Russian propaganda insists on, I think it is absolutely unacceptable for the ordinary citizens of the United States or the civilized world.”
The situation with language in Ukraine has changed dramatically because of the war, and in the occupied territories Russia again pursues the Russification policy, Kremin explained.
“During the 11 years of the war in Ukraine, the language picture has been significantly restored. And today, the vast majority of Ukrainian citizens, regardless of the region, whether it is the south, whether it is the East, or whether it is the West of Ukraine, gives preference to the Ukrainian language in both the official spheres of public life and in private communication. Instead, numerous cases of linguocide and humiliation of people and destruction of national identity have been recorded since 2014, we continue to record it in temporary [російській] occupation, ”he summed up.
Earlier, Prime Minister Denis Shmigal responded to a petition to block songs in Russian on strings in Ukraine. The head of government noted that in international law, Ukrainian legislation and the rules of broadcasting of foreign platforms there are no legal grounds for banning or restricting a musical product on a linguistic basis.
