In an interview with UNIAN, Ukrainian singer Sowa spoke about the loss in the war, about changing the meanings, and how to remember the dead.

Are there any people you lost in your life? What were they?
Unfortunately, nowadays, almost every Ukrainian family loses their loved ones, and my family also did not miss … In our family many men among those who protect the country on the main front. My father’s two brothers defend our sky. One of them is my father’s brother, my uncle – disappeared. For several months we had no connection with him. We understood that this could only indicate two things: either he is in captivity or he is no longer among us.
And this is the worst. When you do not know what happens to a person who is part of your family. It’s scary and painful. Many questions and excitement: where is he? Is it alive? It is scary to imagine what torments the person is in, if he is in captivity, holding on to a single hope of returning home. I wish everyone our military to return to their homes, where they will be expected and appreciated every moment near them.
How did you experience these losses? What helped you stay?
The presence of loved ones nearby is what helps in any life situations. Being surrounded by people who live this situation with you and share your feelings.
When I learned of my uncle’s disappearance, I could not understand that it was really. I was most concerned: how my father experiences, not knowing what was happening to his brother.
At such moments, you should open up loved ones that can support. It is not necessary to hide emotions in yourself – they need to be lived so that at least a little relieve the emotional pressure that rolls with such a terrible news.
The presence of loved ones-that’s what helps in any life situations-singer / photo press serviceDid your war change your attitude to life, creativity, loved ones?
Definitely. My view of creativity has become older. I have never written songs about love for my country and the power of our land. After the start of a full -scale invasion, my first author’s song was that tears were not weakness, it is our strength: the ability to live emotions to survive. This is how the song “Tears is my weapon” appeared. Subsequently, I wrote the House – a track about patriotism and the struggle for my rights.
Not only the attitude to creativity, but also to life has changed. Only in comparison do you understand how we have not appreciated what has become the most important today. When the night goes without sirens and explosions, it is a small miracle. Do not wake up from the siren, do not rush into shelter – such things have become invaluable.
The look at the time has changed. Now you know: you need to act, do not delay life for later. If at the beginning of the war, many asked, “Is this a time?” – Today the answer is one: “And when, how not now?”
Peace, freedom of movement, life without fear – all this is now perceived completely differently.
How do you now support those who have lost your relatives? Do you have a personal mission in this?
The support we can give is our words that are confirmed by actions. When you say “I’m near and ready to help” – you must really be near and help.
Gratitude is also a form of support. We need to remember every hero who gave life for us. We cannot relieve the pain of loss, but we can support the families of heroes – sincerity, respect, memory. This is our duty – to remember their courage and sacrifice.
We are all responsible for keeping memory – singer / photo press serviceHow would you like Ukraine to remember the dead? What can each of us do for this?
To remember – you need to remember. To remember – you need to see the consequences of war and never repeat mistakes. Not to avoid problems rather than to allow them again.
Monuments, as the alley of heroes of glory, is the first thing to remind us of the dead. Every time I pass by the flags with photos of the dead in Kiev, it returns to reality. It is the pain that these families live.
We are all responsible for keeping memory. To do this, you need to celebrate important dates, talk about them, honor the heroes. Those who have children – should tell them the truth about the history of our country. In adulthood, they know: you cannot let the enemy into their home and forget about the power of their language and culture.
