“The Kremlin continues to use narratives that Russian officials have repeatedly used to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for further militarization of Russian society in the long run – probably preparing for a potential future protracted conflict with NATO,” the report reads.
Analysts point out that on April 20, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the EU of igniting “neo -Nazi ideology” in Europe and stated that Russia would “make every effort so that this ideology does not raise its head” and destroy Nazism “once and for all.”
The ISW states that Lavrov’s statements are part of the Kremlin’s ancient efforts aimed at using the Soviet Union’s contribution to the victory over Nazi Germany and the wider myths about the Great Patriotic War, as well as to denounce Europe and NATO – these efforts are aimed at increasing the negative moods in the longitudinal moods.
The Kremlin still appealed to the myths of the Great Patriotic War to convince the Russian population that their growing social and economic casualties in favor of Russian military efforts in Ukraine will help to achieve convincing victory, analysts write.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Kremlin’s high -ranking officials regularly use vague term “denacification” to calls for changing the regime in Ukraine and the establishment of a pro -Russian puppet government, and the statements that the Nazis were supervising the Ukrainian government, Putin used to justify the full -scale invasion.
The ISW adds that the Kremlin is increasingly using the same tactics against Ukraine in Finland and the former Soviet republics, including Estonia and Moldova to justify their attempts to control independent countries and create information preconditions for a possible future Russian aggression.
