Details: On Monday, April 14, Harvard University officially rejected the requirements of the Trump administration to introduce rigid state supervision and radical changes in the management of the institution. The University called these requirements that violate the first amendment to the US Constitution, exceed the government’s powers in accordance with the law on civil rights and threaten the autonomy of a private institution.

“No government – no matter what the party is in power – should dictate to private universities, what they can teach, whom they can enroll and hire, as well as what areas of study and research they can conduct,” – wrote Harvard Alan Harber President in a letter to the university community.
The five -page document of the Government received by Harvard contained a number of requirements, in particular:
- appointment of federal supervision of the university at least by 2028;
- audit of the reception system of foreign students;
- closure of all programs and politicians in diversity, equality and inclusion (Dei);
- conducting an external audit on “ideological diversity” at the university.
“The university will not give way to its independence and will not abandon its constitutional rights,” the Huber said.
The attorneys representing Harvard, in response, stressed that in the last 15 months the university has already made a number of changes: it has introduced disciplinary measures for violators, strengthened the programs for promoting ideological diversity and increasing the level of security.
Harvard became the first elite higher education institution to openly refused to comply with the administration’s requirements.
Last month, the Federal Government reduced Columbia University funding by $ 400 million, including hundreds of research grants. Unlike Harvard, representatives of Columbia University reported that they were “active dialogue” with the administration, trying to return these funds.
The decision of Columbia University to negotiate with the government has criticized a number of organizations. The American University Professor Association and the American Federation of Teachers jointly filed a claim, arguing that the administration violated the first amendment and the law on civil rights, abolishing the financing of research unilaterally.
