Conor McGregor has announced that he would run in the election of President of Ireland / Photo ReutersUFC fighter Conor McGregor officially stated his candidacy for President of Ireland, promising to defend the interests of the country, in particular in matters of migration. He stated this on Thursday, shortly after meeting with US President Donald Trump in the White House, The Hill writes.
McGregor has decided to run as an opponent of the European Migration Covenant, which is aimed at simplifying the procedures of border control and acceleration of asylum within the EU.
“The next presidential election should take place until November 11, 2025. Who else will resist the government and oppose this bill? Any other presidential candidate whom they will try to put forward will not resist them. I will do!” – he wrote on Thursday on the platform X.
He also suggested that the pact implemented the referendum, instead of being approved by only the House of Oireachtas and the President.
“As a president, I would take this bill to a referendum. Although I am strongly opposed to this pact, it is not my choice or choice of government. It is the choice of the people of Ireland! Always,” he said.
“This is a real democracy! I would also be interested to hear how our government officials agree with this pact. I would like to hear the debate! Then the vote!” he added.
Although McGregor has never held political positions, he received Trump’s commitment, who on Monday took him in an oval office and took part in joint photoshoots.
The UFC’s record holder decided to postpone his return to the battles for the sake of political struggle. He stated:
“Ireland, choosing for you, and it is easy. Vote for me as your president, and we will save Ireland together.”
McGregor political ambitionsBack in September, the fighter hinted at the possible participation in the elections, stating that he would like to change the country management system and ask the question of the powers of the Lower House of Parliament – Dáil éirenn.
“As the president I have the authority to convene Dáil and to dissolve it. It would be my authority as a president. I know very well. Ireland needs an active president who will be fully occupied by the people of Ireland. This is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is approaching,” he added.
