The Ukrainian language is rich in synonyms and borrowing, and sometimes even native speakers mistakenly consider some words to be Russisms. In fact, some of them are quite literary, although they are often replaced by other options.
Without Russisms. Few people guess how to say “tspochka” in Ukrainian – as many as three options
Let’s understand why words point, circle, drawing, food and clothing They are not Russisms and can be considered the right Ukrainian language.
1. Point
Many believe that the right Ukrainian word is a point and a point is Russism. However, this is not quite true. Correct use of the word point:
- In mathematics: the point of intersection of straight lines
- In geography: a coordinate point on the map
- In the figurative value: a weak point
The dot is used mostly in punctuation (For example, put a point in a sentence), so it cannot replace the point in all cases.
2. Circle
Often, the word is perceived as Russism, offering a replacement by a circle. In fact, both words are literary, but with different meanings. When to use a circle properly:
- In the sense of the community of people: a circle of friends, a round table
- In the meaning of the object form: the circle is different from the square
- In expressions: a closed circle and a closed circle – both options are possible
The circle is more suitable for geometric shapes (For example, draw a circle), but in many contexts the word circle remains absolutely correct.
3. Figure
Many Ukrainians believe that the word drawing is Russism, and correctly to say a drawing. However, in the Ukrainian language, both words exist, but have different meanings. Correct use of the word drawing:
- As a graphic image made by pencil, pen, coal: pencil drawing, artistic drawing
- In the sense of drawing style: pattern drawing, fabric drawing
The picture is used more for ordinary drawing (For example, drawings of children), while the drawing is more commonly used in art.
4. Eating
The word food is often confused with Russism, although it is of Ukrainian origin. How to eat the word food:
- In the meaning of the food consumption: not to talk while eating
- In some dialects, the word food occurs more often than food
Food is more common and is considered a neutral literary option, but food is also entitled to exist.
5. Clothing
The word clothing is often considered Russism, but it has ancient Ukrainian origin. Correct use of the word clothes:
- Peasant clothes (an outdated but literary version)
- Winter clothes (found in dialects)
Clothing is considered a major modern option, but the word clothing is found in Ukrainian literature, in particular in the works of Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka.
