According to the sources of the agency, Canada expected from the very beginning that the “Seven Group” would agree on a joint statement that would cover the topics of war in Ukraine, situations in the Middle East and relations with China. In addition, Canada hopes for the adoption of a separate declaration that will apply to G7 efforts in the fight against the so -called “shadow fleet” of Russia.
However, as diplomats say, this time it was extremely difficult to reconcile the full text of the final communique, and some of them do not rule out that the parties may not reach a compromise.
According to sources, the United States insists on removing from the text the mention of the sanctions and the war of Russia against Ukraine, but at the same time require stringent wording regarding China.
Three diplomats said the United States also opposed a separate statement on the “shadow fleet” of Russia.
Commenting on this, Rubio said that there were always contradictory moments, adding that Washington could sign nothing that could prevent Russia and Ukraine at the negotiation table.
“We feel that the language of antagonism sometimes complicates the process of planting the parties at the negotiating table, especially since we are now the only ones who seem to be able to make such negotiations possible,” he said.
The Secretary of State expressed confidence that the G7 would eventually agree on a document that will be meaningful and uniting, without undermining “our ability to plant both parties at the negotiating table.”

- In February, the Seven Group was unable to approve a joint statement on the third anniversary of a full -scale war between Ukraine and Russia due to sharp differences with Washington’s position.
- Before that, it became known that the United States refused to call Russia an aggressor in a G7 statement before the third anniversary of the Great War.
- Bloomberg claimed that the United States even threatened to withdraw the support of a joint statement by the Seven Group states.
