Orban proposes to hold a referendum in Hungary on Ukraine’s accession to the EU

Hungary will hold a referendum on whether Ukraine should be allowed to join the European Union, Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban said to journalists after a European Council meeting in Brussels.

“I think we should take a serious question of Ukraine’s membership in the EU. At the moment, it is impossible to make a responsible decision, and I do not want this decision to be made behind the back of the people. Therefore, I came to the conclusion that we need to hold a referendum on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. We will spend it quickly and simply, ”said Orban.

The results of the referendum in Hungary are not legally binding.

Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siyarto hinted that Hungary could block Ukraine’s accession to the European Union due to the cessation of oil and gas transit from Russia.

Hungary, represented by the head of the government of Viktor Orban and the head of diplomacy Peter Siarta, has repeatedly demonstrated his favorable attitude to the Kremlin. Since the beginning of a full -scale Russian invasion, Budapest has made statements that contradict the overall position of the EU on Ukraine support.
