“During this meeting of the European Council, subject work on EU security for Ukraine will begin, which will include planning the possibility of placement of military missions in Ukraine,” the EU official said.
He reported that by this point, “the debate has not yet taken place”, only some EU states expressed their desire or unwillingness to send their troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees.
“Perhaps even more states will support this initiative at the summit,” the European official added.
However, he said, a specific decision on the placement of EU States troops in Ukraine cannot be taken before the format of peaceful settlement in Ukraine is clear.
“To talk about specific decisions prematurely. There was no ceasefire, a peace agreement has not yet been signed. The political context is constantly changing,” the European Truth interlocutor stated.
He reminded that as the first element of security guarantees to Ukraine, the European Union considers “supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine, strengthening the Ukrainian army so that in the event of a new aggression they can protect themselves.”
The last thesis is in the most fresh version of the draft conclusions of the European Council summit on January 6, the European official said.
Prehistory:
- The Summit in London defined the support of the Armed Forces with the “first level” of Ukraine’s security guarantees.
- Meanwhile, Hungary continues to threaten to block the inclusion of the mention of Ukraine’s military support in the final statement of the EU summit on March 6.
- Therefore, the EU is preparing that the pro -Russian group of EU leaders can disrupt the key decisions of the summit this week.
