This was stated in an interview with CBS News by US Finance Minister Scott Bessent, answering whether President Donald Trump instructed him to give up a mineral agreement after a conflict with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky:
“It is impossible to have an economic agreement without a peace agreement. A prerequisite for the economic agreement is the desire of the Ukrainian leadership to conclude a peace agreement.”
When the journalist asked if this agreement had only a step towards the negotiation process to end the war, Bessent said that it had to be, but Zelensky “violated the sequence” and “tried to reconcile the agreement in the eyes of the whole world” before a private lunch.
According to the US Minister, it is not about the mineral agreement, but about the “general economic agreement”. “And I think we should see if President Zelensky wants to continue. What is the point in an economic agreement that will become controversial if he wants the fighting to continue. President Trump wants a peace agreement,” he added.
