The mass deportations of immigrants, which was stated by Donald Trump, can lead to serious economic upheavals in the United States.

Studies by Doctor of Philosophy of Washington Francisco Pedrasi show that the expulsion of millions of people will have a negative impact on key sectors of the economy, including agriculture, construction and services. Labor shortages in these sectors will inevitably lead to an increase in housing prices, food and other goods.

Since the beginning of 2025, US immigration services have delayed hundreds of illegal immigrants daily, planning the deportation of tens of thousands of people during the first months of Trump’s reign. However, the lack of funding and resources slows down this process. To implement its plans, the administration invited $ 175 billion to the Congress to ensure immigration control over four years.

Immigrants make up about 5% of the US labor, but in some industries their share is much higher. About 50% of employees, many of whom are highly qualified, live in agriculture without legal permission. Their deportation will lead to a decrease in production volumes, an increase in labor costs and an increase in food prices. A similar situation will be in the construction industry, where about a quarter of workers do not have legal status. Reducing the number of builders slows down the pace of construction, which will increase the crisis of available housing.

The experience of individual states confirms the possible consequences. The 2011 Alabama Law, directed against illegal immigrants, led to the outflow of labor, which caused the state of losses of up to $ 10.8 billion in annual GDP. This shows that similar measures at the national level can have even larger consequences.

Opponents of mass deportations indicate that immigrants do a job that many Americans refuse to pay taxes, providing financing for social programs. In annual calculation, illegal immigrants make more than $ 96 billion to the budget. However, they do not have access to a number of government benefits, such as social security and Medicare, which makes their contribution to the economy especially significant.

Although supporters of deportations say that this will create more jobs for Americans, research shows that the lack of employees and increasing labor costs can lead to a reduction in economic growth. In conditions of high inflation and labor deficit, the deportation of millions of people can destabilize the labor market, reduce consumption and lead to financial losses for business.

Thus, if the Trump administration really fulfills its promises for mass deportations, the United States will face serious economic difficulties, Pedras warns. In the long run, this step can undermine the stability of the US economy by increasing the burden on businesses and households.
