“The incredible and mostly true story of Belle Gibson, the glorious end of Cobra Kai, the return of arguably the world’s most talked about reality show, Kate Hudson flexing her comedy muscles and Robert De Niro leading a prestige TV show are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in”, — write: www.hollywoodreporter.com
On Feb. 5, Amy Schumer’s comedy Kinda Pregnant debuts on Netflix. Director Tyler Spindel’s movie centers on Lainy (Schumer), who wears a fake baby bump while feeling jealous of her best friend’s pregnancy and ends up meeting her perfect guy. Rounding out the cast are Jillian Bell, Will Forte, Damon Wayans Jr., Brianne Howey, Alex Moffat, Joel David Moore, Lizze Broadway, Urzila Carlson and Francis Benhamou.
The name Belle Gibson may not be familiar to many people outside of Australia, but her incredible story, depicted more-or-less in the Netflix drama Apple Cider Vinegar, has the potential to be the talk of social media. Debuting on Feb. 6, the six-episode show is a playfully fictionalized take on the story of Gibson, the Australian single mother who launched a wellness empire by convincing the world she had brain cancer but was successfully curing herself with an all-natural lifestyle. Starring Kaitlyn Dever as Gibson, Apple Cider Vinegar is created by Nine Perfect Strangers writer Samantha Strauss, who scripted the show with Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien. The series was loosely inspired by the non-fiction book The Woman Who Fooled the World, written by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano, the two journalists who uncovered the details of Gibson’s deception.
The end is night for Cobra Kai, and yes it must die! Sadly. Part 3 of the sixth and final season of Netflix’s immensely popular martial arts comedy debuts on Feb. 13 and the logline reads: “After a shocking result in the Sekai Taikai, Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai must reckon with their pasts while facing an uncertain future both on and off the mat. Almost 40 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, it’s all been leading to this.”
In what’s becoming a Valentine’s Day tradition, the newest season of Netflix’s Love Is Blind debuts on Feb. 14. The reality smash hit has come in for a lot of criticism of late, with season seven particularly causing a great deal of passionate debate online. Still, the format is as wildly popular as ever and continues to spawn international spinoffs. Season eight of Love Is Blind will follow singles from Minneapolis, Minnesota and is already in some bother with the National Labor Relations Board!
Movie icon Robert De Niro leads Netflix’s most prestige TV launch for February, in the political thriller Zero Day. The six-episode limited series, America is reeling following a cyberattack that leaves thousands dead. De Niro plays a former president who is brought back into the White House inner circle and is asked to head up the Zero Day Commission and charged with finding the perpetrators of the devastating attack. Written and executive produced by Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim, Zero Day features a heavyweight cast of Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Bill Camp, Dan Stevens, McKinley Belcher III and Angela Bassett. The miniseries launches on Feb. 20.
On Feb. 27, Netflix debuts the sports comedy series Running Point. Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, the new appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise. Being thrown into the job after a scandal forces her brother (Justin Theroux) to resign, Hudson’s Isla has to work on proving her skeptical family, the board and sports community that she is adept for the job. The 10-episode series also stars Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis and Max Greenfield.
Movies added to Netflix in February include Happy Feet, Happy Feet Two, It (2017), Magic Mike XXL, Miss Congeniality, The Nice Guys, Parasite, Queen & Slim, Space Jam (1996), Spanglish, The Wedding Planner, The Founder, Spencer, Rambo (2008), Rambo: Last Blood, Peninsula, Train to Busan, To Catch a Killer, Despicable Me 4 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
